Experience the Excitement of a Savannah St. Patrick’s Day

A person celebrating St Patrick's Day in Savannah. It won’t take long to discover there is no shortage of things to do and see in Savannah, especially when staying at a rental from Sid Was Here Short Term Rentals. Our furnished rentals are found throughout town, so adventure is always right around the corner. If you’re looking to make your Savannah getaway even more memorable, time your visit to line up with one of the most popular events of the year: St. Patrick’s Day.

What to Know about the Annual Festival

Here in Savannah, the festivities aren’t limited to just March 17. The famous Forsyth Park gets into the holiday spirit by turning the water of its recognizable found green. The ceremony includes the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal, who is named earlier in the month.

There is a special mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist to honor the Irish immigrants that settled in Savannah and the U.S. At the end of the mass, there is a parade of Irish organizations and families from the cathedral through the Old Fort area to the site of the Celtic Cross Monument in Emmet Park. Here there will be a formal ceremony that recognizes Savannah’s Irish community.

For information about additional events, check out the festival website. Don’t forget to stop by a local bar at some point for a green pint.

A Parade of Green

Perhaps the most anticipated event for the festival is the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which takes place on March 17. There are plenty of public parking options, but we recommend getting there as early as possible to secure your spot. There are also shuttle options if you’d rather park farther away from the route.

Several of our properties are within walking distance of the parade route, making getting to a viewing spot a breeze. For guests on a budget, our rentals on the outskirts of Savannah in areas like Pooler and Richmond Hill have a free shuttle service to the parade, so you won’t have to worry about driving or looking for parking.

Enjoy the parade in style by reserving bleacher spots. Individual seats are offered on Bay Street, by the Colonial Cemetery and the cathedral. Roads do start to close leading up to the 10:15 a.m. kick-off, so be sure to keep that in mind when planning your arrival.

This is one of the country’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parades and features marching bands, service members, dancers, and floats. The parade starts on Gwinnett Street near Forsyth Park and works its way through the Historic District. Take a look at the route map to find your perfect viewing spot.
