Why City Market Is the Best Place to Book a Short-Term Rental in Savannah

If you have started researching where to stay in Savannah, you already know the problem. Every hotel, every rental, every neighborhood claims to be “in the heart of downtown.” Most of them are not. Some are twenty blocks from anything you actually came here to see. Some are
across the river. Some look close on a map and then you realize the walk involves a highway and a parking garage.

There is one part of Savannah where that problem disappears completely: Savannah City Market, the four-block stretch between Franklin Square and Ellis Square in the Historic District.
If you want to stay somewhere walkable to everything — and we mean actually walkable, not “walkable if you are training for a marathon” — this is the area to book.

Here is why guests keep choosing City Market rentals over every other option in the city, and what makes the neighborhood different from anywhere else you will stay in America.

You Can Leave Your Car Parked for the Entire Trip

Savannah was laid out in 1733 around a grid of public squares, and 22 of those squares are still there. That 300-year-old city plan is why the Historic District is one of the most walkable downtown cores in the United States.

From a rental within a few blocks of City Market, you can walk to:

River Street — the cobblestone waterfront, riverboat cruises, Plant Riverside District, rooftop bars, and the candy shops that locals will never admit they love

Broughton Street — the main shopping corridor, anchored by boutiques, restaurants, and coffee shops

Forsyth Park — about a 15-20 minute walk south, through a dozen of Savannah’s most beautiful squares

The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist — worth seeing even if you are not Catholic

Bay Street — rooftop views of container ships on the river, plus some of the best cocktail bars in the city

Most ghost tour pickup points, most trolley stops, most restaurants you will actually want to try

You do not need a rideshare. You do not need to valet park twice a day. You do not need to figure out where the parking garage is at 11pm when you are tired and full of shrimp and grits. You walk home.

It Is Genuinely One of the Best Cities in the Country for a Bridal Party

Savannah shows up on nearly every top-ten bachelorette destination list published in the last five years — The Knot, Brides, travel bloggers, wedding planners. It is in the same conversation as Nashville, Austin, and Charleston, and most brides-to-be who have been to all of them rank Savannah near the top.

The reason is simple. A bridal party wants a beautiful city, great food, a legal way to walk from bar to bar with a drink, photo-worthy streets, and a house large enough for the whole crew to stay together. Savannah delivers all of it, and City Market sits in the middle of every activity a bachelorette itinerary tends to include.

For the bride planning the trip, a rental near City Market means:

– Dinner at somewhere like The Olde Pink House or Vic’s on the River, then walk to drinks

– Pedal tavern or party bike tours that start and end downtown

– Ghost tours that pick up within a few blocks of your front door

– River Street shops and rooftop bars within a 10-minute walk

– Everyone under one roof, which matters when you are coordinating ten people across two time zones

It is the same for wedding guests, weekend reunions, birthday trips, and girls’ trips in general. The larger your group, the more you benefit from not having to split Ubers and coordinate meeting points. A good City Market rental turns the whole group into one household for a weekend.

The Events You Actually Want to Be Near

Savannah runs one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the country—only New York and Chicago are bigger. The 2026 parade steps off March 17 and runs for about three hours, winding through the Historic District past more than 350 marching units, pipe bands, Irish dancers, and the Budweiser Clydesdales.

If you are staying near City Market during St. Patrick’s week, you are walking distance to the parade route, walking distance to every bar in the to-go cup zone, and walking distance back home when you are ready. Guests who stay further out spend half the day trying to get into and out of the district. Guests staying inside the district just walk downstairs.

The same logic applies to:

– New Year’s Eve on River Street—Savannah drops a big red to-go cup at midnight instead of a ball, which is exactly the kind of small-town-big-energy detail that makes this city fun

– The Savannah Film Festival (late October/early November) – Savannah Music Festival (spring)

–     SCAD events and exhibitions throughout the year

– Every weekend live music night at City Market itself, which has a performance pavilion steps from where you would be staying

If it is happening in Savannah and it is worth going to, odds are extremely high that it is happening within walking distance of a City Market rental.

Why a Rental Beats a Hotel Here Specifically

We run a property management company, so yes, we are biased. But this one is easy to argue.

Savannah’s hotel inventory is concentrated in large chain properties along Bay Street and around Ellis Square. They are fine. They are also $300-$450 a night during peak season for a room with two double beds and a view of a parking deck. A group of four or six people in that setup is paying for two or three rooms and eating every meal out.

A short-term rental in the same neighborhood gives you:

– A full kitchen (coffee at home, wine on the porch, breakfast without a wait)

– A living room where the whole group can actually hang out together

– Washer and dryer for longer trips

– Usually a private courtyard, porch, or garden—which in Savannah matters, because the

outdoor space is half the point of being here

– A real house on a real street in a real historic neighborhood, which is the experience you came for

For anything larger than a couple, or anything longer than two nights, the math and the experience both favor a rental. In a city where the squares and the architecture are the main attraction, staying in a historic home is closer to the actual spirit of the trip than staying in a lobby.

What to Look For When You Book

A few things we tell guests to check before they book anywhere in Savannah, not just with us:

1. Is it actually in the Historic District? Some listings use “Historic District” loosely. Ask for the specific cross streets. If it is south of Gaston Street, you are outside the core walkable zone. If it is across the river on Hutchinson Island, you are a shuttle or ferry away from downtown.

2. Is it a licensed short-term rental? Savannah requires an STVR certificate for any rental under 30 days in the Historic District, Victorian District, and Streetcar District. Licensed properties are inspected, taxed, and insured properly. Unlicensed ones are a liability risk to you as the guest.

3. Who manages it? A professionally managed property means someone answers the phone at 10pm when the AC acts up or the lockbox jams. A part-time owner managing from another state usually does not.

4. What is the real walking distance to City Market, River Street, and the squares? Ask for specifics. Six blocks is a pleasant walk. Twenty blocks is a cab ride you did not budget for.
