Where Starland actually is

Starland is not a separate historic district. It is a creative-arts pocket inside the larger Thomas Square Streetcar Historic District, the area south of Forsyth Park bordered roughly by 31st Street to the north, Victory Drive to the south, MLK Jr. Boulevard to the west, and East Broad Street to the east. When locals say “Starland,” they almost always mean the Bull Street corridor between Anderson Street and Victory Drive, plus two or three blocks east and west. That’s where the murals, the food, and the music live. The rest of Thomas Square is mostly residential — historic Victorian and craftsman homes, some beautifully restored, some still mid-renovation. The neighborhood took its name from the Starland Dairy, a milk-processing plant at 2425 Bull Street that anchored the area for most of the 20th century. By the 1990s it was abandoned. Local artists turned the surrounding blocks into studios, galleries, and shops. Two decades later it’s the densest concentration of independent food, drink, and creative business in Savannah. Starland is roughly a 30 to 40 minute walk from River Street, or an 8-minute drive. It is not the Historic District. If you want to walk to River Street, stay in the Historic District. If you want a quieter, denser, more creative pocket of Savannah with the city’s best food trucks at the end of your block, this is your neighborhood.

The Historic District is a walk if you want it: 30 to 40 minutes south-to-north along Bull Street, passing through five squares (Monterey, Madison, Chippewa, Wright, Johnson) on the way to City Hall and the river. Most guests Uber it (about $8–12) instead of walking back at night.

Picking the right block within Starland

Starland looks small on a map and it is, but the experience changes block by block. Three honest tradeoffs:

If you want to walk to Starland Yard, breweries, and food in 5 minutes:

Stay between 38th and 41st Streets, on or within one block of Bull Street. This is the dense block — every food and drink option above is here. Trade-off: Bull Street has steady traffic and Starland Yard runs late on weekends. Quiet seekers will not love a Bull Street-facing rental on a Saturday night.

If you want a quieter, leafier residential block:

Look one or two blocks east or west of Bull, especially east toward Habersham Street or south toward Victory Drive. You get the same five-minute walk to the action, much less street noise, and the porches and craftsman homes that make Thomas Square photogenic.

If you want to be closest to Forsyth Park:

Stay in the northern slice of Starland — between Anderson and 34th Streets. That puts you 5 to 10 minutes from Forsyth and the Victorian District, while still inside Starland’s Bull Street walkability.
Honest note on safety and edges: Starland’s rough edges are along its outer western boundary — particularly the Jefferson Street and Montgomery Street corridors. If you want to feel comfortable walking back from dinner at 10pm, stay east of MLK Jr. Boulevard. The Bull Street corridor itself is well-lit, busy, and frequently policed. Sid Was Here does not list rentals in blocks where we wouldn’t tell our own friends to stay.

Permits, parking, and the rules nobody warns you about

Starland is part of Savannah’s short-term rental overlay zone, which means properly-permitted vacation rentals operate here legally — but the city caps the number of permits per ward, same as the Historic District. New permits are not freely issued. When one expires without renewal, another can be granted, and that’s it. Every Sid Was Here rental in Starland operates under a current Short-Term Vacation Rental (STVR) permit issued by the City of Savannah. The permit number is posted inside the property and listed in city records. We do not list anything we cannot operate legally. Parking: Most Starland properties rely on free on-street parking. This is normal here — Bull Street and the side streets have ample street parking on most days, but it is first-come, first-served. There are no reserved spaces unless a property’s listing specifically says so. Some of our properties include off-street pads or driveways — we list parking specifics on every listing. Watch for street-cleaning days (signs are posted on each block). If you park on the wrong side on cleaning day, you’ll get ticketed. We send check-in instructions that flag this for your specific property. Quiet hours: Most Starland residential blocks observe 10pm quiet hours. The exception is the immediate Bull Street/Starland Yard cluster, which is louder later on weekends. We tell guests upfront which category their rental falls into — that’s the kind of detail that determines a five-star review or a one-star. Occupancy: Savannah’s STVR ordinance enforces maximum occupancy on every permitted rental. We list the legal maximum on every property and don’t negotiate. Exceeding occupancy is the fastest way to lose a permit, and we like keeping ours.

Starland District: Frequently asked questions

Is Starland District a safe area to stay in Savannah?

The Bull Street corridor through Starland — between Anderson Street and Victory Drive — is well-lit, busy with restaurants and bars, and frequently active until late evening. The blocks immediately east and west of Bull are quiet residential streets. The neighborhood’s rough edges are along its outer western boundary, particularly the Jefferson and Montgomery Street corridors. Sid Was Here only manages properties in blocks where we’d tell our own friends to stay.

What’s the difference between Starland and the Historic District?

The Historic District is the original 1733 city grid with 22 squares, the riverfront, and most of Savannah’s traditional tourism. Starland is a creative-arts neighborhood inside the Thomas Square Streetcar District, about a 30 to 40 minute walk south of River Street. Starland has more independent food, drink, and creative businesses per block; the Historic District has more squares, history, and walkable tourist attractions. They’re a 5 to 10 minute Uber apart.

Can you walk from Starland to River Street?

Yes — it’s roughly 30 to 40 minutes at a leisurely pace, straight up Bull Street, passing through Monterey, Madison, Chippewa, Wright, and Johnson Squares. Most guests walk one direction and Uber back at night ($8–12). It’s a beautiful walk during the day; less ideal solo at 11pm.

Where can I park in Starland?

Most Starland properties use free on-street parking, which is generally available throughout the neighborhood. Some Sid Was Here rentals include dedicated off-street parking — we list parking specifics on every listing. Watch for street-cleaning day signs to avoid tickets.

Is Starland good for a 30-day stay or longer trip?

Yes — Starland is one of Savannah’s strongest neighborhoods for medium-term stays (30 days or more). It’s residential, walkable to food and coffee, and quieter than the Historic District. Several Sid Was Here properties are configured for 30+ day rentals with workspace, full kitchens, and laundry. Our founder Julie Gates co-authored The 30 Day Stay (BiggerPockets, 2023) — this is a category we know well.

How far is Starland from Tybee Island?

About 19 miles east — 25 to 35 minutes by car depending on traffic and season. Tybee is a real day trip from Starland, not a walk or rideshare distance.

What’s actually at Starland Yard?

Starland Yard is a fenced-in food park at 2411 De Soto Avenue with a full bar (the Yard Bar), three permanent restaurants (Pizzeria Vittoria Napoletana, T-REX BBQ, Uncle June’s), rotating food trucks, picnic-table seating for around 300, and weekend live music and events. It’s family-friendly, pet-friendly, and the gravitational center of Starland.

Is Starland good for SCAD-related travel?

Yes. SCAD students, families, and SCAD-related visitors often pick Starland for its proximity to SCAD studio buildings, its affordability versus the Historic District, and the creative scene that grew up around the school. Several of our rentals book heavily during SCAD orientation weekends, family weekends, and graduation.

Why book a Starland rental through Sid Was Here

Local operator who knows Starland

We list properties we’d recommend to friends. Starland has a wide range — restored Victorians on Habersham, mid-renovation craftsman bungalows, and converted dairy buildings — and we know which Sid Was Here property fits which kind of trip. Our founder Julie Gates is a Savannah-based RE/MAX broker. We answer the phone in town, not from a call center.

Permit-compliant inventory only

Every Starland property we list holds a current STVR permit. Compliance is not optional. We don’t book guests into rentals that could be shut down, and we don’t book owners into management contracts on properties without permits.

Strong on 30-day stays

Starland is one of the best Savannah neighborhoods for medium-term stays. Julie co-authored The 30 Day Stay (BiggerPockets, 2023). Several of our Starland properties are explicitly configured for 30+ day rentals — workspace, full kitchen, laundry, and rates priced for the longer stay. Ask us for the current MTR-friendly Starland inventory.

Own a Starland or Thomas Square property?

Starland is one of Savannah’s most interesting markets to operate in — small inventory, loyal repeat guests, strong 30-day demand, and a permit system that rewards local relationships.
