Where Pooler Actually Is — and Why That Matters for Your Commute
Pooler sits 10 miles west of downtown Savannah, off I-95 at exits 102, 104, and 106. The drive to downtown is 14–18 minutes off-peak via I-16; rush hour can push it to 25–30 minutes. The drive to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is 5–10 minutes from most of Pooler.
The big employer commutes break down like this:
- Gulfstream Aerospace (main campus, off Crossroads Parkway): 5–12 minutes from most of Pooler — this is why Pooler exists in its current form
- Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant (Bryan County): 25–30 minutes south via I-95
- Hunter Army Airfield (Savannah): 20–25 minutes east via I-516 / DeRenne
- Fort Stewart (Hinesville): 35–45 minutes south via I-95 / GA-144
- Georgia Ports Authority (Garden City): 12–18 minutes via Pooler Parkway and Highway 80
Pooler is car-dependent. There is no meaningful public transit. Plan for two vehicles per household.

What’s Walkable in Pooler — The Honest Truth About Suburban Layout
Pooler is a car-first town. Most of it was built between 2000 and 2024, and the design assumes you have a vehicle. There are pockets of genuine walkability — mostly inside master-planned communities — and a handful of mixed-use corridors. Here is what is actually walkable, and what isn’t.
Walkable Pockets (Real, Limited)
- Tanger Outlets and Pooler Town Center (Pooler Parkway): If you live in The Preserve at Godley Station, Two Addison Place, or one of the apartments lining Pooler Parkway, you can walk to Tanger Outlets, Metro Diner, Splendid Shabu, Sam Snead’s Oak Grill, Another Broken Egg Cafe, Flat Top Grill, and a half-dozen national chains. It’s a sidewalk-and-parking-lot walk, not a charming downtown stroll, but it is genuinely walkable.
- Inside Savannah Quarters: The community has internal sidewalks, a clubhouse, golf, and the Savannah Quarters Country Club. Walkable for residents inside the gates. Not a public-access pedestrian zone.
- Inside Godley Station’s Village Park area: Sidewalks throughout, a 5,000 sq ft clubhouse, junior Olympic pool, tennis courts, walking trails, stocked fishing lagoons. Walkable inside the master plan, not to outside retail.
Where You Will Drive
- Grocery (Publix, Kroger, Walmart Supercenter, Sam’s Club): 3–8 minutes by car, all on Pooler Parkway or off Highway 80
- Schools: Most homes are 5–12 minutes from their zoned elementary/middle. Bus service is standard. Walking your kid to school is rarely possible outside Godley Station School’s immediate radius.
- Downtown Savannah: Always a drive. 14–25 minutes depending on traffic.
- The beach (Tybee): 35–45 minutes east via I-516 and US-80. You’re not walking, biking, or transit-ing to the ocean from Pooler.
Restaurants Worth Knowing About
- Metro Diner — Pooler Parkway near Tanger. Reliable, family-friendly, breakfast-through-dinner.
- Sam Snead’s Oak Grill — Tanger Outlets Boulevard. The dressed-up option in Pooler. Solid steaks and seafood.
- Splendid Shabu — Hot pot, good for groups, near Tanger.
- WOB Bar & Kitchen (World of Beer) — Pooler Parkway. The “going out” option for adults without driving downtown.
- Another Broken Egg Cafe — Brunch standard.
- Seoul — Korean BBQ near Tanger, locals’ pick.
- PhatGirlz — Soul food, Pooler Parkway corridor.
- Tequila’s Town — Tex-Mex, multiple locations across Pooler.
- Vic’s on the River, The Olde Pink House, Husk — All in downtown Savannah, all 20-minute drives. If you want chef-driven dining on a regular basis, you will drive to Savannah.
Picking the Right Pooler Community — What Each Neighborhood Actually Feels Like
Pooler is a collection of master-planned communities, apartment complexes, and older single-family pockets — and they are not interchangeable. Sid Was Here only manages properties in communities we’d live in ourselves, and we are direct with renters about which one fits which kind of life. Here is the honest breakdown.
Savannah Quarters
Where: West side of Pooler, off Pooler Parkway, gated.
Vibe: Pooler’s luxury anchor. Greg Norman-designed golf course, Savannah Quarters Country Club, custom and semi-custom homes, mature landscaping. Most expensive ZIP-code-equivalent inside Pooler.
Best for: Senior Gulfstream engineers, executive relocations, golf-loving retirees, families who want amenities and don’t blink at HOA dues.
What’s hard: Higher entry rent than the rest of Pooler (often $1,000+/month above comparable square footage outside the gates). HOA rules are real and enforced. Not the move if you want a quick in-and-out.
Godley Station (The Villages of Godley Station — Arbors, Copper Village, Towne Lake, etc.)
Where: Off Pooler Parkway, central Pooler, mostly newer construction (2000s–2010s).
Vibe: The largest master-planned community in West Chatham. ~900 homes in The Arbors and Copper Village alone. Junior Olympic pool, clubhouse, tennis, walking trails, stocked fishing ponds. Godley Station School (K-8) is inside the community.
Best for: Families with school-age kids, Gulfstream commuters who want a 5-minute drive to work, anyone who wants newer construction with full amenities at a reasonable price point.
What’s hard: HOA-managed (rules around exterior, parking, paint colors). Pooler Parkway traffic gets heavy 7:30–9am and 4:30–6:30pm. The newest sections lack mature trees — summer afternoons can feel exposed.
Forest Lakes
Where: Off Highway 80 and Quacco Road, central-east Pooler.
Vibe: Older, more established Pooler. Larger lots, mature oaks, longer-tenure homeowners. Less HOA-driven than Godley Station or Savannah Quarters.
Best for: Families who want a real yard, dog owners, anyone who values established neighborhoods over shiny-new amenity packages.
What’s hard: Fewer walking trails and pools-on-tap than newer communities. Some streets on the older edges have homes that have been deferred-maintenance landlord rentals — Sid Was Here is specific with prospective tenants about which blocks we manage and why.
Pooler Parkway Apartments (The Preserve at Godley Station, Two Addison Place, Carlyle at Godley Station, The Station at Savannah Quarters)
Where: Spanning the Pooler Parkway corridor, mostly between exits 102 and 106.
Vibe: Mid-rise garden-style apartment communities, mostly built 2010–2022. Pools, fitness centers, dog parks, clubhouse amenities. Walking distance to Tanger Outlets and Pooler Parkway retail.
Best for: Single Gulfstream and Hyundai relocations, traveling medical staff, MTR guests, anyone who wants flexibility before committing to a buy. Most relocating professionals start here.
What’s hard: Apartment-living tradeoffs (shared walls, parking lot life, less storage). Some complexes have stronger reputations than others — Sid Was Here knows which.
South Pooler / Highway 80 corridor (older single-family, some mobile homes)
Where: South of I-16, along Highway 80 near Pooler proper.
Vibe: Older Pooler. Pre-2000 construction, mixed lot quality, some mobile home areas, some solid 1980s/1990s ranches.
Best for: Renters with tighter budgets who want a yard and don’t need an HOA. Some real value here for the right tenant.
What’s hard: Inconsistent block quality. Sid Was Here does not manage rentals in this zone unless we know the specific block well. We will tell you directly which streets are worth a tour and which to skip.
What Relocating to Pooler Actually Looks Like — Rules, Schools, Commutes, and the Stuff Nobody Tells You
Pooler is the most popular relocation destination in West Chatham County for a reason — and it’s also where most relocation surprises happen. If you are moving here for Gulfstream, Hyundai, Hunter Army Airfield, or any of the other anchor employers, this is the practical context that matters.
Schools — The Single Biggest Driver of Where You Should Live
Pooler is in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System. The schools that matter most for Pooler families:
- Godley Station School (K-8) — Located inside the Villages of Godley Station. One of the most in-demand schools in West Chatham for K-8 families. Living inside Godley Station is the simplest way to be zoned for it.
- Pooler Elementary School (K-5) — Long-running Pooler school, smaller (about 397 students), strong parent reviews.
- Frances Meeks Elementary School — Newer Pooler-area elementary, ~864 students, well-rated.
- West Chatham Elementary (K-5) and West Chatham Middle (6–8) — Larger schools serving the broader Pooler area.
- New Hampstead High School (9–12) — The high school most Pooler-zoned kids attend. ~1,436 students.
- Magnet/specialty options — Savannah Early College, Woodville Tompkins Technical & Career, and Garrison Arts (downtown Savannah) are application-based. Many Pooler families apply to magnet programs in addition to their zoned schools.
Verify school zoning at the address level before signing a lease. Zoning lines move, and two houses on the same street can be zoned differently. Sid Was Here flags this on every Pooler lease tour.
Military Considerations
Pooler is roughly 20 minutes from Hunter Army Airfield (Savannah) and 35–45 minutes from Fort Stewart (Hinesville). Pooler is a popular off-base choice for Hunter AAF families who want newer construction and stronger schools than on-base offers. Sid Was Here works with PCS-cycle families May through August and December through January every year. We can support BAH-aware lease negotiations and DLA paperwork — and we know which Pooler properties accept the standard military lease clause for orders-based termination.
Gulfstream, Hyundai, and Corporate Relocation
- Gulfstream Aerospace (Crossroads Parkway, west Pooler): The dominant employer in Pooler. 5–12 minute commutes from anywhere in Pooler. Most senior engineers and managers buy in Savannah Quarters or larger Godley Station homes; new-hire engineers often start in Pooler Parkway apartments.
- Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant (Bryan County, just south of Pooler): Pooler is the closest mid-size town with strong housing inventory and family infrastructure. Drive is 25–30 minutes south on I-95.
- Mitsubishi, JCB, International Paper, Target Distribution, Georgia Ports Authority: All within 15-minute drives. Pooler’s logistics-corridor location is the reason these employers cluster here.
If you are relocating from a corporate package, ask whether furnished MTR is covered for the first 30–90 days. Sid Was Here is on relocation-firm preferred lists and accepts direct corporate billing.
HOA Rules — Almost Every Pooler Community Has One
- Savannah Quarters: Strict architectural review, exterior color committee, golf-cart rules.
- Godley Station: Standard HOA — exterior maintenance, parking enforcement, no commercial vehicles in driveways.
- Forest Lakes: Lighter HOA, longer-tenure neighborhood.
- Apartments: Property-specific rules (pet policy, pool hours, guest parking) vary by complex.
If you are coming from a non-HOA market, ask about HOA dues and rules before falling in love with a specific listing. They are real, enforced, and add to your monthly cost beyond rent.
Pooler Parkway Traffic — The Daily Reality
Pooler Parkway is the main artery, and it congests at:
- 7:30–9am (school drop-off + Gulfstream shift)
- 11:30am–1pm (lunch + Tanger Outlets traffic on weekends)
- 4:30–6:30pm (school pickup + Gulfstream shift change + retail)
If your work or school requires getting onto Pooler Parkway during these windows, build in an extra 10–15 minutes.

Let a Local Broker Run It Right.
Pooler property management isn’t complicated, but it’s full of small things that go wrong when nobody’s local — HOA letters, A/C calls in August, lease renewals that should have been signed in January and weren’t, security deposit accounting that doesn’t pass an audit. Sid Was Here runs the systems and answers the phone.
